Operations Center: Creating Variable Rate Prescriptions

Prescription Creator is a tool added by a connected partner (Agrian) to the John Deere Operations Center so that growers can easily make management zones and variable rate prescriptions for seeding and application operations. Creating a prescription allows you to optimize the placement of inputs, reduce unnecessary input expense in historically low-yielding zones of the field and maximize your economic benefit in high-preforming areas. What is required for VR planting with John Deere planters:

  • Most hydraulic/electric drive planters
  • A boundary for the field for which the operator is creating a prescription

How to make a script:


  1. Log into your John Deere Operations Center account
  2. Ensure that you have yield data in your account. Having multiple years of data is preferred but not required. 
    • Not sure if you have harvest data or how to get it into operations center? Contact us today and we will be happy to assist you.
  3. Be sure to have an up to date boundary for the field you wish to make a prescription for if any changes to the farm have been made.
  4. Before starting your prescription, add the variety you plan on using for that field using the setup -> products tab
  5. When making corn planting prescriptions, increase the seeding rate in the high producing areas of the field, and lower it in the low producing areas of the field. For a soybean seeding prescription, it is suggested that you put more seed in the poorer areas of the field and less seed in the higher producing, high fertility areas in the field.          *It is strongly recommended that you work with your agronomist to best tailor your prescriptions to your farm for best results
